A new project

The next garden project is to create a herb beds either side of the steps up to the lawn. The slopes to the side of these steps are currently planted with rather tatty grass which can't be mown because of the steepness of the slope, so gets a going-over with shears.  The grass is growing through wire netting which was put in place before we moved in - apparently to discourage a badger that was trying to dig here.

The large Rosemary bush that we use most often is a long way up the garden across the lawn and frequently we have been up there in the winter cutting Rosemary for a particular recipe with torch in hand and waterproofs and wellies.  So this will bring the herbs nearer the house and allow us to manage the slope as well.

The plan is to terrace the slopes with 2 small brick walls and beds where a range of herbs can be planted.

In the photo above the line of bricks are on top of the lawn and represent where the edge of the top bed will be.  The wooden post mark where the lower wall will be built ( NOT to the height of the posts!!).

This is from the top of the steps looking down.  There will be a small bed at the top and one half-way down with two small retaining walls to form a terrace. This will be repeated on the other side of the steps as well.  Hopefully it will be a good sunny spot for herbs.

I'll keep you posted with the progress.
